Just now this morning my local newspaper had front page banner headlines "Troubled VA to undergo landmark restructuring".
The Democratic response concerning problems at the VA has me shaking my head, vigorously. The reason for the long waiting lists were.... surprise surprise ... cutbacks in funding for the VA by the House Republicans so there was insufficient staff to handle demand. I do not like the fact that the Prez accepted Eric Shinseki's resignation. If memory serves me correctly, Shinseki is a true hero, the Army Chief of Staff who stood up to George W. Bush saying Iraq would require more troops than Mr. Rumsfeld felt were necessary, and who got fired for his accurate assessment.
So... my feeling is that the Democrats should have vigorously attacked the Republicans for making a mess of the VA by allocating insufficient funds. I know that the proximate determinant of the news stories was that some fool of a VA regional administrator was falsifying performance statistics in an effort to look good. But the underlying cause of the problem is Republican indifference to the health of veterans who had been promised good health care as part of the compensation for their service in the defense of our country.
